make your computer into server in just 5 min

This covers how to quickly set up your computer (running Windows) as a server. This will allow you to host your own website from your computer and will let you to make web pages with 'buttons' allowing you to control things in your home (robots, cameras, etc) from the internet (I'll cover that in future instructables).

We'll be using apache: very popular, free, open source server software.

While making your computer into a server will be very quick, you should read through the Apache http server software documentation to learn about how to set it up securely (so that people don't hack into your computer). I'll give this advice but read elsewhere for more:
1) best to install this server software on an old computer that you don't use for anything other than as a server.
2) best to create a seperate user account in windows with limited system access and install this software in that account.

Download the apache http server software from this apache mirror site:

_Or_ go to http://www.apache.org/, navigate to the download from mirrors page, pick a mirror and download from there. As you can see from the above link, you'll want to navigate to the mirror's apache, httpd, binaries, win32 folder.


What To Download:
= You should download the newest version (highest version number), it's 2.2.6 as I type this. Check here to see what the newest version is if you want: http://httpd.apache.org/
= You want the .msi file, this is a windows installation file (like an .exe)



Install It
Double click the .msi file you just downloaded, it will install, use the default settings, typical install (unless you want the source code, then do custom install).

It should automatically fill in some form boxes with your DNS server name (in my case it was earthlink.net) during the installation.
for server name, put whatever you want, I don't think spaces are allowed though. and make sure after your name you have .earthlink.net (or whatever DNS name is).
for email, put in your email (or don't doesn't matter much).

Run It
Once it's installed I think it starts the server running right away. You can see if it's running by looking for the icon in the lower right of your task bar (see pic). If it's not running and you want to start it, or stop it, just navigate in your start menu (see pic).

if you get an error message when you try to start the server write down the error# and look it up in the documentation or google.


Test It
Test it out, when you're sure the server is running open a web browser and type:
http://localhost
into the address bar, this should show up (see pic).

Yay, it works, now do something useful with it (will be covered in future red hacker,.. maybe)

1. Click on "Start" in the bottom left hand corner of screen
2. Click on "Run"
3. Type in "command" and hit ok

You should now be at an MSDOS prompt screen.

4. Type "ipconfig /release" just like that, and hit "enter"
5. Type "exit" and leave the prompt
6. Right-click on "Network Places" or "My Network Places" on your desktop.
7. Click on "properties"

You should now be on a screen with something titled "Local Area Connection", or something close to that, and, if you have a network hooked up, all of your other networks.

8. Right click on "Local Area Connection" and click "properties"
9. Double-click on the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" from the list under the "General" tab
10. Click on "Use the following IP address" under the "General" tab
11. Create an IP address (It doesn't matter what it is. I just type 1 and 2 until i fill the area up).
12. Press "Tab" and it should automatically fill in the "Subnet Mask" section with default numbers.
13. Hit the "Ok" button here
14. Hit the "Ok" button again

You should now be back to the "Local Area Connection" screen.

15. Right-click back on "Local Area Connection" and go to properties again.
16. Go back to the "TCP/IP" settings
17. This time, select "Obtain an IP address automatically"

With a little practice, you can easily get this process down to 15 seconds.

It disables much of the removal process like Windows RegEdit.exe, MsConfig.exe and also TaskMan.exe. Variations of these also disables your keyboard during normal booting, floods your disk with virus files in the root directory and also the windows directory and some also floods your directory with Folder looking icons that is an executable..

So here are some tips in avoiding this:
1. Always make all files visible like system and also hidden files with their extension shown.Go to Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Option > View
* Enable Show Hidden File
* Disable Hide Extensions for know file type
* Disable Hide Protected OS files

2. Never Use the Autorun functionality in Windowswhenever you put a disk(flash, memory card, usb drive devices and other form of removable drive) it is always a practice to scan it first. but to avoid being the first to be infected by a wild one, always use Windows Explorer to browse the files.

Use the left side(Folder Window), to browse the files.
Whenever you see an autorun.inf file, delete it! remove the disk and insert it again to avoid clicking it.
To disable autorun go to gpedit.msc >> computer config >> admin templates >> system >> turn off autoplay

If you have lost the Administrator password, you must have the following to recover:

1. A regular user account that can logon locally to your Windows NT Workstation, Server, or PDC whichever you are recovering. If you already have an alternate install of NT, skip to The Process, Set 02.

2. The Windows NT CD-ROM and setup diskettes (winnt /ox to make them from the CD-ROM).

3. Enough room to install a temporary copy of NT (Workstation will suffice, even to recover on a PDC).

4. Your latest Service Pack.

5. The Process:

6. Install a copy of Windows NT as TEMPNT, on any drive. Install your latest Service Pack.

7. Boot the alternate install.

8. At a command prompt, type AT HH:MM /INTERACTIVE CMD /K where HH:MM is 10 minutes from now (or however much time you need to complete the remaining steps and logon to your primary installation).

9. Use Regedt32 to edit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule

10. Double click Schedule and click the one sub-key.

11. Double click the Schedule value name in the right hand pane and copy the REG_BINARY string to the clipboard.

12. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and Load Hive from the Registry menu.

13. Navigate to your original installation\System32\Config folder and double-click System.

14. At the Key Name prompt, type ORIGSYS.

15. Navigate to ORIGSYS\Select and remember the value of Current; i.e. n.

16. Browse to ORIGSYS\ControlSet00n\Services\Schedule and if Start is not 0x2, set it to 0x2.

17. With Schedule selected, Add Key from the Edit menu.

18. Type 001 in Key Name and click OK.

19. Select 001 and Add Value name Command as type REG_SZ and set the string to CMD /K.

20. Select 001 and Add Value name Schedule as type REG_BINARY and paste the string from step 06.

21. Select ORIGSYS and Unload Hive from the Registry Menu.

22. Use Conrol Panel / System / Startup... to make your original install the default.

23. At a CMD prompt:
attrib -r -s -h c:\boot.ini edit c:\boot.ini and either change the id of the TEMPNT lines to Maint 4.0 on both entries if you intend to keep this maintenance install or delete them. attrib +r +s +h c:\boot.ini

24. Shutdown and restart your original install.

25. Logon as your user account and wait for HH:MM from step 03.

26. When the CMD prompt opens, it will be under the context of the Schedule user, either the System account or an administrative account. If this machine is the NOT the PDC, type MUSRMGR.EXE, if it is the PDC, type USRMGR.EXE. If you get an error, click YES and type your domain name.

27. Set the Administrator password and logoff.

28. Logon as Administrator.

29. If you are deleted the TEMPNT entries in step 18, delete \TEMPNT



Note: If the Schedule service runs under the context of a Domain Administrator on any member workstation, all you need to recover the PDC Administrator is a network login

Speed up your firefox browser and load pages about 20% faster than previous.

1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipeliningnetwork.http.proxy.pipeliningnetwork.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages 2-3 times faster now.

When you recieve an email, you receive more than just the message. The email comes with headers that carry important information that can tell where the email was sent from and possibly who sent it. For that, you would need to find the IP address of the sender. The tutorial below can help you find the IP address of the sender. Note that this will not work if the sender uses anonymous proxy servers.



First of all, the IP address is generally found in the headers enclosed beween square brackets, for instance, [129.130.1.1]
Finding IP address in Gmail

1. Log into your Gmail account with your username and password.
2. Open the mail.
3. To display the email headers,

* Click on the inverted triangle beside Reply. Select Show Orginal.

4. manually find the IP address, proceed to 5.
5. Look for Received: from followed by the IP address between square brackets [ ].

Received: from [69.138.30.1] by web4587.mail.***.yahoo.com

6. If you find more than one Received: from patterns, select the last one.
